How to Store Firewood Properly: Keep Your Logs Dry All Year Round

Buying premium kiln-dried firewood is only half the battle. To enjoy the best heat output and longest burn times, it's important to store your logs correctly once they've been delivered.

At The Northern Firewood Co, all of our firewood is kiln-dried to below 20% moisture content and Ready to Burn® certified. With the right storage, your logs will stay in perfect condition until you're ready to use them.

Why Proper Firewood Storage Matters

Incorrectly stored firewood can absorb moisture from the air and rain, making it harder to light and reducing the amount of heat it produces.

Properly stored kiln-dried logs provide:

  • Easier lighting
  • Longer burn times
  • Higher heat output
  • Less smoke
  • Cleaner stove glass
  • Reduced creosote build-up in your chimney

Store Your Logs Somewhere Dry

The ideal place to store firewood is:

  • A log store with good airflow
  • A garage with the door occasionally open
  • A covered lean-to
  • A carport
  • Under a waterproof cover that allows ventilation

Avoid completely sealing logs in plastic as this traps moisture.

Keep Logs Off the Ground

Always raise your logs off the floor using:

  • Pallets
  • Timber bearers
  • Purpose-built log stores

This prevents moisture rising from the ground and keeps air circulating underneath.

Allow Plenty of Airflow

Air circulation is the secret to keeping logs dry.

Leave gaps around your stack and avoid pushing logs tightly against walls.

Cover the Top, Not the Sides

If storing logs outdoors:

  • Cover the top to protect from rain.
  • Leave the sides open for ventilation.

This allows moisture to escape naturally.

Don't Store Large Quantities Indoors

Bring in only enough logs for the next day or two.

Keeping a small basket beside your stove helps warm the logs before burning, making them even easier to light.

How Long Will Kiln-Dried Logs Last?

If stored correctly, kiln-dried logs can remain in excellent condition for several years.

Unlike freshly cut timber, kiln-dried logs are already at the optimum moisture content, so they simply need protecting from getting wet again.
