Why October Is the Perfect Time to Stock Up on Kiln-Dried Firewood

October 3, 2026

The evenings are getting darker, temperatures are starting to drop, and log burners across the UK are coming back to life.

If you rely on your log burner, wood-burning stove, fire pit or outdoor fireplace throughout autumn and winter, October is the perfect time to get your firewood stocked up and ready for the colder months ahead.

At The Northern Firewood Co, we supply premium kiln-dried firewood with nationwide UK delivery, making it easy to get winter-ready before the really cold weather arrives.

Why Buy Your Firewood Before Winter?

As soon as the first properly cold spell arrives, demand for firewood naturally increases.

Getting stocked up early means you can head into winter knowing you already have a good supply of dry, ready-to-burn logs at home.

It also means no last-minute rush when the temperature suddenly drops and you decide it's time to light the fire.

Whether you use your log burner every evening or just at weekends, having a supply ready to go makes life much easier.

Why Choose Kiln-Dried Firewood?

The quality and moisture content of your firewood can make a big difference to how well it burns.

Our premium kiln-dried logs have a moisture content below 20%, helping them light easily and produce a strong, consistent fire.

Burning properly dried wood can provide:

Easier lighting
A hotter, more efficient fire
Cleaner burning
Less smoke than poorly seasoned wet wood
More consistent performance from your stove or fireplace

The Northern Firewood Co is also Ready to Burn® certified (WS5818/00001), giving you confidence that you're buying properly dried firewood suitable for domestic burning.

Oak, Birch or a Blend – Which Should You Choose?

We supply a selection of premium kiln-dried firewood so you can choose the option that best suits how you like to burn.

Kiln-Dried Oak is a great choice for long, steady burns. Its dense nature means it burns more slowly and is ideal for keeping a log burner going for longer periods.

Kiln-Dried Birch lights quickly and produces an attractive, lively flame. It's an excellent choice when you want to get a fire established quickly.

Oak & Birch Blend gives you the best of both worlds. Birch helps get the fire going while oak provides a longer, steadier burn.

Not sure which to choose? Our Oak & Birch Blend is an excellent all-round option for everyday log burner use.

How Much Firewood Should You Order?

This depends on how frequently you use your fire.

For occasional use, smaller quantities can be ideal. But if your log burner is regularly used throughout autumn and winter, buying in bulk can be much more convenient.

Our Jumbo Bags are ideal for households wanting a substantial supply of premium kiln-dried logs without taking up too much storage space.

For serious log burner users, our XXL Crates provide approximately 2m³ of loose logs, equivalent to around three of our Jumbo Bags.

Buying a larger quantity means fewer deliveries and gives you peace of mind knowing you're stocked up for the colder weather.

Don't Forget Kindling and Firelighters

Good logs are only part of getting a fire started quickly.

Keeping a supply of dry kindling and wood wool firelighters alongside your logs means everything you need is ready whenever you want to light the fire.

Store your logs somewhere dry and well ventilated, and keep your kindling protected from moisture.
